Jazmin Carney

ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:

“Hi, my name is Jasmine Carney, and I chose this image because it reflects a piece of my heart. One of my favorite things in the world to do is to be in the air, to be flying or en route to some type of travel. It's a very serene place. When you think of underprivileged neighborhoods, and you think about the people who are around and who look like me, they don’t travel as often or don’t get the opportunity to do it as often, especially those who live in this particular neighborhood or ones like it. So one of the things I always try to encourage people to know is that it is possible. It does not matter where you are from — it is always possible to get out and travel. You save, you plan for it, but you can do it.

The symbolism in itself — when you look at the picture and see how close it is, all of the lights represent landmarks, homes, and people. When you look down at it, you see just how big and intricate it can be when you consider neighborhoods and different pieces of people. While you're looking down, it may look small, but when you get into it, it is huge — huge clusters and neighborhoods of people. When I think about that — how, from above, it looks small, but as you get closer and walk the streets or drive through, the parts become more intricate. The closer you get to the neighborhood, or to the people, the more astounding it becomes. That’s why one of my favorite places to be is in the sky — it gives you a different perspective, especially when you start to look around and get into the heart of things.”
