Strong Women

A Series in Partnership with Cincinnati Union Bethel

An innovative collaboration between two Cincinnati nonprofits led to a six-episode podcast series and a public exhibition that transformed a storefront along McMillan Street in Walnut Hills into a celebration of “Strong Women” beginning on International Women’s Day 2021.

The streetscape display combines images, words, and audio created by the nonprofit A Picture’s Worth based on stories centered on the “strong women” of the nonprofit Cincinnati Union Bethel. The site of the installation, designed and built by undergraduate students from the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music’s Lighting Design and Technology program, is Cincinnati Union Bethel’s Cincinnati Scholar House, home to mothers pursuing higher education credentials.

A Picture’s Worth is a nonprofit focused on building both practice change and narrative change. Leaders work with media, nonprofits, educators and other partners aligned to bridge divides created and sustained by traditional, deficit-based media models and narratives.

Cincinnati Union Bethel empowers women to break the cycles of poverty, addiction, and human trafficking. Responding to Cincinnati’s human services needs since 1830, today CUB focuses its impact in Housing, Education and Recovery Services through three innovative programs: Anna Louise Inn, Off the Streets, and Cincinnati Scholar House. Our programs each tackle different faces of poverty and injustice in our city. While working toward distinct results, they are united in their goal to bring about long-term and transformative changes in the lives of vulnerable community members.
