Luther Hornsby

Well this picture right here, even though it might not look like it, it was probably one of the happiest days of my last few years of living. It was my first day next door at the Tender Mercies house. I’d watched it being built way before I knew I was going to be there, and I thought how nice that building is, you know, and I’d even stopped a couple of times to watch it because I was in construction earlier in my life. And then it was such a shock that I got a phone call from Mary, who was running the place at the time, that I was going to get one of these apartments. I was just elated.

I’d been all over. I’d been homeless in the West End and in downtown Cincinnati, so just to get out of the shelter house and go to the mission was just a great stride forward. And then like I said, when Mary gave me that call there…but I got to know a lot of people around here in the West End, you know. I grew up in the country, so it was a little different, but to get to know the people and see the community and how they work together, you know and put things on for people; I’ve seen this place grow.
