The West End

Sharing A Legacy of Resilience

The West End

Thomas Penland

I grew up in the West End. I'm really talking about the bike shop. I have an original picture of the bike shop that was on Linn Street. Right now, it’s a store, but before that, it was a bike shop. His name was Mr. Crawford, and he fixed all the Black kids’ bikes in the neighborhood, and he didn’t charge too much. You know, back then, a bike didn’t come assembled, so he assembled it. You’d come back the next day, and he’d have it ready for you—Mr. Crawford.
