ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH:

“My name is Beverly Jones. My last name was Wilson when we moved into the community. I was in the second grade, and at the time I remember a sign that said Western Hills. It wasn’t long after that the community was rezoned to Westwood. I lived there, naturally, until I graduated from high school.

The community we grew up in had one Black family on the street, and six months later, we moved in. It was a German community. On one part of the street, there was a barbershop to our left; across the street, there was a beauty salon. We had a Dairy Queen, and that place where 7-Eleven is now replaced it.

I find it quite interesting because in the FE Apartments, we had Tony Perez, who was one of the Cincinnati Reds players. We had Veda Pinson, and we had Frank Robinson. We also had Oscar Robertson, César Gerónimo, and Pete Rose. Now, this is interesting because this was the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and the Cincinnati Royals. I just thought it was wonderful that we had all these people who lived in the FE Apartments, which were in our community.”
